Colorado authorities, one of the states in the US which legalised cannabis, collected so much money from legal sales of weed that it’s unclear what to do with this huge sum.Legal marijuana turned out to be a gold mine for Colorado budget
Colorado authorities planned to spend taxes from legalised marijuana sellers on new schools in the state. However, marijuana legalisation turned out to be a gold mine. Colorado collected more than $50 million in pot taxes in the first year of legal marijuana, while only $ 20 million needed for schools in the state
Now authorities think where should they spend the huge sum left. That means that every adult person in Colorado can get about $7.63 from pot money.
However, there is still debate whether the money should be distributed between all the adult Colorado inhabitants or the marijuana customers only. “I don’t care if they write me a check, or refund it in my taxes, or just give me a free joint next time I come in,” told the press one of the regular marijuana buyers, David Huff, adding that “the taxes are too high, and they should give it back.”
“It’s just absurd,” commented on that issue Colorado state Senator Pat Steadman, one of the state budget writers, adding however, that “this is what the voters want, and if we’re going to have pot, and the constitution says it’s legal, we damn well better tax it.”
“While the blind government of Africa are still harassing nature and holding back the economic potential of marijuana in Africa, this is what’s happening in the United States of America,” told the son of late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, Seun, urging African leaders to legalise marijuana.
