Buhari Cancels Jonathan’s Upgrade Of FCE Kano To A University Status

Federal College of Education (FCE) Kano

Academic activities at the Federal College of Education (FCE) Kano have been suspended due to a strike by academic staff who are protesting against the government’s reversal of the decision to raise the status of the college to a Federal University of Education.

Shortly before the Jonathan administration left office on May 29, the Federal Executive Council approved the upgrading of three colleges of education to the status of federal universities of education in order to provide the necessary manpower to the neglected educational sector.

President of the academic union of the FCE Kano, Dr. Abubakar Sadiq Haruna, said that the union was left with no option other than to direct its members to down tools and boycott classes.

He condemned the decision by the new government to revert the college back to its former status as counter-productive, and said that the strike action is going to remain peaceful.

He revealed that classes will not resume until President Muhammadu Buhari rescinds his decision and allows the college to operate a full university system.
